In his Carnegie Medal Award Speech for Amazing Maurice, Pratchett says: Most importantly for me though, it is just a terrible adaption of the story. Opening with an example of the con is ok, but making a big musical number about it wastes several minutes and does nothing to actually introduce the characters. Oh and it opens with a terrible song and dance number. The screenplay writer really did not trust kids watching to pick up on any non-direct plot or character development that was happening. This leads to some really unnecessary repetition, like with the rats introduction scene having an extended (and very clunky) conversation about Mr Bunsy and then Malicia appearing in her narrator scene to basically explain what was already very clear. But why, after cutting him and the changing the opening and the ending does it pad so much of its (very short 85 min) running time.įor some reason Malicia is now the narrator of the story and appears between many scenes to talk about what did or will happen. Hamnpork isn’t in it, which is a shame, but it could have worked without him and his subplot. Like all adaptions, it had to cut thing to fit into its running time which is fine, that’s all part of the process. Overall, whilst it does have better quality CG, it’s overall production is on par with something like Hoodwinked or The Magic Roundabout CG movies. I was never even at least looking forward to seeing any of the rats come back after the first scene. Hell, when you include the bad plotting, the rats aren’t really characters at all, just basic tropes – big leader, the priest, the comic relief.

And between the bad designs and dull voice acting, none of the rats feel like characters. The voice acting was mostly flat, even from good voice actors, because the dialogue and story was so clunky. It was boringly ugly with really uncreative designs and animation for both the humans and the rats. The was literally only 1 funny joke in movie (when Nourishing ties the rubber band to her, not Darktan). But even just as a kid’s movie, divorced from the source material, it was terrible. I know adaptions from one media to another can require big changes and I didn’t go into expecting a direct transfer. Obviously, this contains spoilers throughout. I’ll break my criticisms down into 3 parts, but TLDR: I feel like the person who adapted this book, doesn’t like/respect kids, the book and adapting books in general. Not just insulting to me, a lifelong Pratchett reader, but just insulting to children and viewers in general. Some reviews are only ok, but more than a few are positively glowing. I wasn’t going to bother writing this, and I know it’s not been released in the US yet, but still not having seen any bad reviews for the film is bothering me. I really should have written this over New Years when I watched it and the details were fresh in my mind, but…Īm I the only person who hated The Amazing Maurice movie?
